Bliss House Tips & Tricks: How to hang curtains like a designer.

Updated: Jul 25, 2023

Hanging curtains can be tricky? Where do you start? How long should they be? Don't worry, here are some easy do's and don't to perfectly hanging your curtains to get the designer look!

The Do's & Don'ts

Curtains can easily and affordably update a space and give a room the "finished" look. They make the room look cohesive, soften the space and instantly add warmth. However there are a few tips & tricks to hanging your curtains just right to get the designer look.

The do's✅

  1. Measure before you buy. You know how they say "measure twice, cut once?" Well, the same applies to curtains. You want to measure the width, & length of you window prior to ordering. You want to make sure your curtains extend 6 inches above the window and at least 8"-12" past the frame.

  2. Hang at least 6 inches above window. Make sure the rod is at least 6 inches above the window frame. This will give the illusion that the ceilings are higher.

  3. Extended at least 8 inches past the frame. You want to make sure your curtains extend at least 8-12 inches past the window frame. This will widen the window and give the illusion there is more light.

  4. Touching the floor. Make sure your curtains just touch the floor (you can have a puddled look too but not more than 3" on the floor.) This is why step 1 is so important. You do not want your curtains too long or it won't look tailored.

Don'ts🚫

  1. Don't hang the curtain right above the window. This will make the ceiling feel low and closes in the room.

  2. Make sure your rod extends past the window to give the illusion the window is larger.

  3. Make sure your curtains touch the floor. If they are too short they will shorten the space and make the room feel disjointed.

My Favorite & Affordable Curtains

Here are some of my favorite curtains that come in multiple colors, are customizable and have different weights. If you live in a colder climate I recommend lining your curtains for added warmth and depth. If you like the look of light and airy go with linen! Velvet always adds a moody and rich texture to the space.
